However, one aspect that often goes overlooked is the keyboard — the gateway through which we input sensitive information like passwords, credit card details, and personal messages.

Your Smartphone Keyboard

The privacy of your smartphone keyboard depends on several factors, including the type of keyboard you use. Not all keyboard apps are created equal; some may quietly siphon off your keystrokes to centralized servers, posing significant privacy risks.

System Keyboards

Your smartphone's operating system typically comes with a built-in virtual keyboard. While convenient, these system keyboards may still collect data for various purposes, such as improving predictive text and emoji suggestions, or for company profit, yuck!

Third-Party Keyboards

Third-party keyboard apps, though offering additional features like swipe typing and custom themes, often raise concerns about privacy. (cough cough Gboard) You should be sure of the developer’s technical capabilities, and data handling practices before you trust keyboards with your sensitive information.

Understanding the Risks

The risks associated with smartphone keyboards extend beyond data collection. Third-party keyboards may request extensive permissions, including access to sensitive data like location and contacts, raising red flags about potential privacy breaches.

Additionally, some keyboards may contain trackers or employ flawed encryption methods, leaving users vulnerable to data interception and breaches.

There’s also the risk of keyloggers1, which are sometimes present in third-party keyboards.

So, What to Do?

To mitigate privacy risks associated with smartphone keyboards, consider opting for open-source, offline, privacy oriented keyboards and operating systems.

Open-source keyboard apps like OpenBoard prioritize privacy and transparency, offering features comparable to proprietary keyboards without compromising user data.

Operating systems like CalyxOS and GrapheneOS prioritize user privacy by minimizing data collection and eliminating reliance on data-driven corporations like Google and Apple. They also offer toggles to completely shut down internet to and from the apps you choose. Enabling that toggle for your keyboard is a good idea.

But, I love my keyboard app :(

There is a way for you to keep your keyboard app and have it be private at the same time. Though this is not recommended, it is prone to user and software error, it isn’t always guaranteed to be perfectly safe, and should not be used by people who have a high threat model.

Remember the internet toggle we talked about, there are apps that can do the exact same thing on any operating system! You can stop your keyboard from talking to the internet through this method. Apps like Netguard come to mind.

Though there are many downsides for using apps like these, which is why we don’t recommend you do it. It’s way easier to switch to a privacy-friendly keyboard. But if you insist, here some of the things you need to keep in mind:

1. If you don’t have a rooted phone, (which is a good thing for security) these apps will use up your phone’s VPN slot as an always on VPN. These kinds of apps should not do not connect to any VPN, but instead use your phone’s VPN functionality to set a barrier, which has rules for filtering incoming and outgoing traffic. This means that you can’t use a VPN alongside these apps. Any attempt to use another VPN will stop the app’s functionality, increasing risks of data caching2, so tread lightly.

2. User error is really high while using complicated solutions like these. You might accidentally disable the VPN toggle, or force stop the app.

3. Software error sometimes occurs as well, these apps might not be 100% robust, which could cause them to leak data.

4. Your phone might also leak data in some situations, while the app has not started running yet. This could happen for example directly after a reboot, or right after an update.

5. Firewall apps can sometimes consume additional battery power, especially if they are actively monitoring and filtering network traffic. This can impact your device's battery life and overall performance.

6. Some firewall apps may not be fully compatible with all devices or may not work correctly with certain apps or operating system versions. This can lead to unexpected behavior or limitations in functionality.

7. Depending on how aggressively the firewall app filters network traffic, it could potentially impact the performance of certain apps or services that rely on consistent internet connectivity. This could result in slower loading times or disrupted functionality for those apps.

8. You’re adding another party to trust with your data. While firewall apps can help enhance privacy by blocking certain apps from accessing the internet, they may also collect data about your device usage and internet activity. Be sure to review the privacy policy of any firewall app you use to understand how your data is being handled.

9. Like any other app, firewall apps require regular updates and maintenance to remain effective and secure, which also puts pressure on developers to constantly keep updating their app, and on you to keep installing the updates.

10. A firewall app does not stop your keyboard from interacting with the rest of the operating system. Your keystrokes can be passed down to another process or app on your phone that is not blocked by your firewall app, rendering this solution basically useless.

    PS: Privacy-friendly operating systems like GrapheneOS and CalyxOS have this functionality built-in, removing most of these concerns.

If you need to allow permissions, make sure to do so temporarily by either revoking access to that specific permission after you’re done using it or via a dedicated permission interface which offers limited time permissions.

4. Use Private Browsing Mode:

   

   • Consider using your browser's private or incognito mode when browsing to prevent the storage of browsing history, form answers, and cookies. Trust us, your browser will love you back! (privately)

5. Bookmark Secure Websites:

   

   • Save bookmarks for frequently visited websites, especially those that require login credentials, to ensure you always access the legitimate site. This could help prevent fishing attempts. No more URL guessing!

6. Use Reputable Search Engines:

   

   • Be cautious about the links you click on in search results. Stick to reputable search engines and verify the legitimacy of websites before clicking.

7. Disable Autofill for Sensitive Information:

   

   • Disable autofill for sensitive information like passwords and credit card details to prevent accidental exposure1 - you wouldn’t want that to happen to you in real life would you? Don’t let it happen to your browser! -

8. Familiarize Yourself with Browser Settings:

   

   • Explore and understand your browser's settings to customize preferences that enhance security and privacy. If your browser doesn’t offer privacy settings that fit your threat model, consider switching to a more privacy-friendly alternative. 9. Use The Built-in Browser Security Features:

   

   • Take advantage of built-in security features in your browser, such as pop-up blockers and safe browsing settings. Take some time to make your daily browser happier and more secure.

10. Be Skeptical of Browser Notifications:

    

    • Avoid accepting browser notifications from unfamiliar websites, as they can be used for unwanted advertisements, bad redirects, to trigger malware downloads, or even phishing attempts.

11. [BONUS] Don’t Use the Browser’s Password Manager:

    

The browser's password manager may not be the most secure option for storing your login credentials. Instead, consider using a password manager that is independent of your browser, and preferably local to your device with no internet connectivity. These types of password managers offer additional security features and can provide better protection for your sensitive information. Don’t keep all of your eggs in one basket!

Today, we will be covering how to make your router more private and secure in 11 simple steps. So, let’s get right into it!

You can find numerous online resources that provide instructions on how to access the settings you require for your particular router model.

Step 0: Research before buying

Start your security journey by researching reputable router manufacturers and specific router models known for their security features. Look for routers that offer advanced security features such as automatic firmware updates, strong encryption options, and built-in firewalls. If you don’t have at least two of these features, it might be time for an upgrade.

Check if the router manufacturer provides regular firmware updates. Security patches and bug fixes are essential to address vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers. Read user reviews and seek expert opinions on routers you're interested in (you can also read our lovely posts :) ). Online forums, technology websites, and customer feedback can provide valuable insights into the reliability and security of different router models.

Some advanced users opt for routers that support open-source firmware like OpenWRT, DD-WRT or OPNsense. These firmware options often have strong security features and receive frequent updates, though they may require more technical expertise to set up (we believe in you though, you got this :) )

Step 1: Physical Security

Set up your router in a secure location to prevent physical tampering, you wouldn’t want your cat to knock it over for the third time this week, or a hacker to have a party on your precious bandwidth.

Place your router in an elevated position, such as on a shelf or wall mount, to keep it out of the reach of cats and prevent accidental paws interference. If possible, keep the router in a locked room or cabinet. This adds an extra layer of security and prevents curious cats casual access. Ensure the router has adequate ventilation, as it can generate heat during operation. Organize and secure the cables connected to your router to prevent accidental disconnection or tampering.

Step 2: Change Default Admin Password

Most people don’t realize that routers have an admin panel, which is used to configure router settings. But you’re different aren’t you? Kudos to you for educating yourself about router security!

Consumer routers usually come with a default admin password which is very insecure and easy-to-guess (spoiler: it’s usually “admin”). If a malicious entity gains access to your admin panel, he can wreak havoc over your network configuration, or even forward all your network queries to one of his devices for exploitation. Not fun!

Log in to your router's admin panel (usually done through a web browser by typing in the router's IP address) and change the default username and password. Use a strong, unique password that combines letters, numbers, and symbols.

Step 3: Check for Router Firmware Updates

Like any software, router firmware may have vulnerabilities that could be exploited by attackers. Manufacturers release firmware updates to patch these vulnerabilities and strengthen your router's security.

Keep your router's firmware up to date to patch any security vulnerabilities. Check the manufacturer's website or your router's settings for firmware updates. Avoid downloading firmware updates from untrusted sources.

Enable automatic updates, if available. Save yourself some precious minutes you can spend doing things that matter, like hydrating or making a to-do list that won’t be completed on time.

Step 4: Use Strong Encryption

WPA3 is the latest and most secure Wi-Fi encryption protocol to date. It was developed to address vulnerabilities present in its predecessor, WPA2. We hope you’re becoming a better version of yourself too :) . However, WPA2 has been widely used and accepted as a secure encryption protocol for many years. If your router does not support WPA3, WPA2 is still a reliable choice. WEP is no longer recommended for use, it should be avoided at all costs. Even if it's the only option available on your older devices, it's better to upgrade the device or the router's security features.

Use WPA3 or WPA2 (if WPA3 is not supported) for your Wi-Fi encryption. Avoid using WEP, as it's less secure.

You router just thanked you for changing this setting, and so did your devices. Your lonely hacker however is as sad as a lost puppy.

Step 5: Change the Network Name (SSID)

You might have thought about changing your own name. Maybe you found the name “Joe” boring and un-cool, or you needed a break from constantly being yourself. Routers have fantasies about that too you know?

Default SSIDs, often provided by the router manufacturer, are widely known and recognizable. Using these defaults can attract unwanted attention from attackers looking for easy targets.

While it's not a primary security measure, avoiding easily identifiable SSIDs adds a layer of "security through obscurity.1" It makes it slightly more challenging for potential attackers to identify your network as a target.

Don't use a default or easily identifiable SSID. Choose a unique name that doesn't reveal personal information, like Purple056. Your router just got a whole lot cooler ;)

Step 6: Configure Firewall Settings:

Firewalls are cool. They examine incoming and outgoing data packets, checking for signs of malicious or suspicious activity. They can block or allow traffic based on predefined rules, protecting your network from various cyber threats, such as hackers, malware, and intrusion attempts. They can stop potential attacks before they reach your devices. Firewalls also give you control over which types of traffic are allowed to enter or leave your network.

Configure your router's firewall to filter incoming and outgoing traffic according to your threat model, which can help protect your network from malicious connections. You can also start using the word firewall everywhere like they do in the movies, because you’ll really know what you’re talking about after reading this masterclass of a post.

Step 7: Change DNS Servers

Your default DNS provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can track and log your internet usage. Boo! By switching to a more privacy-focused DNS service, you can limit the amount of information that's collected about your online activities.

Some third-party DNS services offer security features, such as protection against phishing sites and malware. They can help safeguard your network from online threats. Keep in mind however that you are shifting your trust from your ISP to your new DNS provider, so choose that carefully.

Something like Quad9 might be your cup of tea if you want a regularly updated pre-determined malware blocklist that’s active on your router. You can set this up once and forget about it, Quad9 will take care of the rest.

If you desire more control over your DNS filters (or you don’t really like tea), as well as access to other security features, you can use a custom DNS provider such as NextDNS or Control D, however this may require constant micromanagement and might be harder to set up. You might also need to manage your own blocklist and allowlist (trust us, it’s more fun than it sounds).

Step 8: Use Two-Factor Authentication (if available)

Even with strong, complex passwords, attackers can employ methods to guess or steal them. 2FA makes it much more difficult for them to gain access, as they would need both your password and the second authentication factor.

Enable 2FA for your router's admin panel if supported, to add an extra layer of security.

Your IT department is jealous of your stellar security practices :)

Step 9: Configure Other Router Settings

• Set up a VPN for your Router: [Optional]

  You don’t need a VPN to be private and secure online. However in some cases, according to your threat model, you might need to hide your IP address (if you’re a gamer for example) or to access region-restricted content on streaming services and websites that might be blocked or limited in your region.

  A router-wide VPN is especially useful if you have a lot of IoT devices2 connected to your router, as most IoT devices don’t offer an interface to set up VPN connections. A good VPN will ensure that any connection made from these devices is encrypted.

  It is important to choose a good, privacy-respecting VPN especially for a sensitive device like a modem.

• MAC Address Filtering:

  Enabling MAC (Media Access Control) address filtering is a security feature that allows you to specify which devices can connect to your network based on their unique hardware MAC addresses. You create a list of allowed MAC addresses, and only devices with MAC addresses on the list can join your network.

  Consider enabling MAC address filtering to allow only specific devices to connect to your network.

• Disable WPS:

  WPS is a convenience feature that allows for easier device connection to your Wi-Fi network using a PIN or a physical button. However, it can also be a security vulnerability, as it has known weaknesses that make it susceptible to attacks.

  Disable Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) as it can be vulnerable to attacks.

• Disable Remote Management:

  Remote management of your router enables you to access and configure router settings from outside your local network. While this can be convenient, it also poses a significant security risk if not properly configured.

  Disable remote management of your router to prevent unauthorized access over the internet.

• UPnP (Universal Plug and Play):

  UPnP is a network protocol that allows devices to automatically discover and communicate with each other on a local network. While UPnP can simplify the setup of devices and services, it can also introduce security risks.

  Disable UPnP unless you require it for specific applications. UPnP can pose security risks.

• DMZ (Demilitarized Zone):

  The DMZ feature in a router allows you to place a device outside of your local network, essentially exposing it directly to the internet. While this can be useful for certain scenarios, like hosting a game server, it can also be a significant security risk if not properly configured.

  Avoid using the DMZ feature, which exposes a device to the internet. Instead, rely on port forwarding to open specific ports for services.

  Modern routers often come with various features that may involve data collection, like cloud services for remote management or remote diagnostics. It's important to review the privacy settings in your router and disable any features that you are uncomfortable with or do not intend to use.

  Check for privacy-related settings and disable features that may collect your data.

Step 10: Backup your Settings

Finally, you’re almost done. Just one last thing to make sure you won’t have to go through this again..

Reconfiguring your router from scratch can be a time-consuming and often confusing process, especially if you've made numerous customizations over time. In the event of a router malfunction, firmware update gone wrong, or a need to reset your router to its factory defaults, a backup of your settings ensures you can quickly restore your network configuration.

1) Set your accounts to “Private”

Setting your social media account to private is like putting a fence around your personal space online. It helps protect your privacy by allowing only approved people to see what you share, reducing the risk of strangers accessing your personal information or photos, which in turn increases your security. Setting your accounts to private also helps to protect against threats like data-scraping1 and identity theft. You wouldn’t want someone else using the supermarket reward points you worked so hard for would you?

2) Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):

This is probably the 100th time we’ve said this, PLEASE enable two factor authentication on any accounts that allow you to do so. 2FA is probably one of the easiest yet most effective steps to keep any hacker or malicious entity out of your accounts. It doesn’t cost you anything and is very straightforward to enable. If you stop reading this blog post right now and go set up 2FA on any account that you own, you will be more protected than the majority of people you know, just saying..

3) Regularly Log Out:

After using social media on a shared or public computer, always log out to prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, it's important to regularly review and revoke unused and old sessions associated with your social media accounts. This simple practice minimizes the risk of someone else gaining access to your accounts.

4) Beware of Third-Party Apps:

Review the permissions you grant to third-party apps connected to your social media accounts. Remove access for apps you no longer use or trust. It's a good practice to periodically assess which apps have access to your data and, if you no longer use or trust a particular app, remove its access. This not only reduces the potential for your personal information to be misused but also helps you maintain better control over your digital presence.

5) Secure Your Email Account:

Your email is the gateway to all your accounts. If it gets breached, hackers can more easily get access to all the other services that use that particular email address. We will cover the basics as well as some advanced rules to follow whenever you’re setting up and using your email service.

Introduction:

Your email is the center of all your activities, which is known in cybersecurity as a single point of failure (SPOF), meaning if your email is compromised, a hacker can more easily access all of the other accounts tied to it. As most online services usually require an email to use or to sign up to, and since a staggering 83% of users use the same password for multiple sites (please stop), your digital life becomes so much harder to manage once a data breach occurs (which will eventually happen).

Moreover, over 75% of targeted cyberattacks start with an email. Which is why it is crucial to practice good email security and hygiene by thinking of your email like a fortress and following the tips outlined in this article. So, let’s start from scratch shall we? Here are 10 steps to build your mighty email fortress..

Step 1: Lay the Foundation

Before even thinking of a cool email handle, like mostSecureMail@yahoo.com, you should start laying a good foundation by choosing a privacy-conscious email provider (and no, I’m not talking about Gmail), as privacy and security often go hand in hand.

Here’s a list of basic things to look for when choosing an email provider:

1. End-to-End Encryption: Ensure that the email provider offers strong end-to-end encryption. This means that only the sender and recipient can decrypt and read the messages.

2. Zero-access encryption: Make sure that emails are encrypted when they are at rest, as in stored on the email provider’s servers. This ensures that even if a malicious party gains access to the company systems, they can’t read any of the content of your emails. It also ensures that the company can’t use your emails for marketing purposes by scanning the content of your emails, sending it to third-parties, or/and using it to deliver targeted ads.

3. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Look for email providers that support 2FA. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring you to provide a second verification method, such as a code sent to your mobile device, in addition to your password when logging in.

4. Open Source: Some email providers are open source, meaning their code is available for public inspection. This transparency can help verify their security practices and reduce the risk of hidden vulnerabilities.

5. Privacy Policies: Carefully review the provider's privacy policy to understand how they handle your data. Look for providers with strict policies that respect user privacy and don't engage in excessive data collection or tracking.

6. Security Features: Assess the email provider's security features, such as spam and malware filters, and their effectiveness in reducing the risk of phishing attacks.

7. Ideology and goals: Search for companies that are committed to keeping your information safe, value their customers, and make it a priority to regularly improve their systems while staying updated on the latest cyber trends.

Step 2: Secure the Premises

After choosing a reputable email provider and a funny email handle, it’s time to secure your account by choosing a strong password. In our earlier posts, we talked about making strong and secure passwords. If you want to check them out, here they are:

If you don’t have that kind of time, here are some of the basic things to implement in a strong password:

1. Never use the same password twice.

2. Use random combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols that are not related to your personal information.

3. Use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters that have no obvious connections or similarities.

4. Aim for at least 12 characters when creating a new password.

5. Don’t use common substitutions (like r3l!v3 instead of relive).

Save —and preferably create— these passwords in a good password manager, more on that in this post:

Step 3: Dig a Moat

If your fortress is in the middle of a wide, open area, it becomes easier for enemies to move their ground troops and get into your valuable castle because they have multiple ways to get in. This is where changing your privacy and security settings comes in.

1. Block Email Tracking: Privacy-respecting providers might offer an option to block email trackers1. Make sure to enable that option.

2. Disable Automatically Loading Images: Disabling auto-loading of images in your email helps protect your privacy by stopping tracking, reducing spam, and preventing malware. As pixel trackers2 can be (and are) sent in emails, images are sometimes used as spam and malware can be embedded into images. You can manually load trusted images when needed.

3. Enable Security Logs: Security-conscious email providers might offer security logs that keep track of all (successful and failed) attempts to access your email service. Keep that feature on to track any suspicious activities and unauthorized access to your email account. If you notice any suspicious activity, take immediate action, such as changing your password and reporting the incident to your email provider's support team.

4. Enable Account Activity Notifications: Some email providers offer notifications for unusual account activity. Enable these notifications to be alerted to any suspicious login attempts.

5. Disable Telemetry and Data Logging: Disable telemetry and data logging from your email provider’s settings if available.

Step 4: Construct a Drawbridge

You can't have a fortress without a drawbridge; that wouldn't look half as cool.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) operates as the first line of defense against unauthorized entry. It acts like a drawbridge, ensuring that the person who's entering really needs to be there.

2FA requires two separate and distinct authentication factors before granting access. These factors fall into three categories: (more on that in a dedicated future post)

1. Something you know

2. Something you have

3. Something you are

Make sure to set up 2FA in your email as well as in your other accounts, to greatly enhance your digital protection.

Step 5: Exclusively Grant Access to Trusted Personnel

Just as you wouldn't let anyone into a castle without checking, you shouldn't hand out your email to anyone who comes knocking. You don’t need to give your email to that health website so you can read the full article on why peanut butter is bad for you (is it really?). That’s what email aliasing3 is for! (will be covered in-depth in later posts)

Services like SimpleLogin or tempMail.org make that process easier than ever, you can set up aliases in a few clicks!

Carelessly giving out your email address has a number of drawbacks, most notably:

1. Spam and Unsolicited Emails: When you share your email address, it may end up on mailing lists that send you spam and unsolicited promotional emails. This can clutter your inbox and make it harder to find important messages.

2. Data Breaches: If the organization or service you provided your email address to experiences a data breach, your email address and associated data may be exposed to hackers. This can lead to further security risks.

3. Privacy Invasion: Your email address can be used to track your online activity and preferences. Advertisers and data brokers may use this information to send you targeted advertisements or sell your data to third parties.

4. Email Account Compromise: As already mentioned, If you use the same email address and password for multiple accounts, a breach of one account could lead to the compromise of others. This is especially concerning if you use your email for password recovery for other services.

5. Increases Susceptibility to Malware: Giving out your email might make you more susceptible to malware, if that email ends up on some hacker’s list.

Step 6: Assemble Guards and Watchmen

Once you’ve set up exclusive access to your fortress, you will need a good and trusted security team to make sure the premises are clear from bad actors that try to infiltrate your castle. These bad actors include:

1. Phishing: Email security threat involving deceptive messages, in which hackers try to pose as a legitimate company or person in order to steal sensitive information.

2. Malware: Email security threat delivering malicious software via email such as in attachments or links.

3. Spam: Unwanted and often harmful email content inundating inboxes.

4. Spoofing: Forging sender information to deceive recipients.

Falling victim to an email scam can have significant consequences. You might lose your money, mess up your credit, or damage your financial reputation. Plus, your personal info, like your identity, could get stolen. These scams usually trick you into giving away your private info, and once the scammers have it, they can use it for various illicit purposes, such as unauthorized access to your accounts, making unauthorized transactions, or engaging in identity theft, which can lead to long-term financial and personal hardships

Step 7: Train your Guards and Watchmen

The value of a workforce lies in their training; untrained manpower is ineffective. Make sure to specifically train yourself and your guards to spot suspicious emails. You should be paying attention to things like:

Check the sender's email address:

Examine the sender's email address carefully. Hackers often use email addresses that mimic legitimate ones but may contain subtle misspellings or additional characters.

Be wary of generic email addresses or free email hosting services, as legitimate organizations usually use their domain-specific email addresses.

Example:

• Legitimate email: support@yourbank.com

• Hacker’s email: support@yourbank-login.com

Look for spelling and grammatical errors:

Phishing emails often contain spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, or awkward language. Legitimate organizations usually have professional communication standards.

Example:

• Phishing email: "Dear customeer, your acount has been suspentend. Please click here to reslove the issue."

• Legitimate email: "Dear customer, your account has been suspended. Please click here to resolve the issue."

Too Good to Be True

If an email offers something that seems too good to be true, such as free software, exclusive offers, or lottery winnings, it's likely a malware attempt.

Beware of urgent or threatening language:

Phishers often use scare tactics to pressure recipients into taking immediate action, such as claiming your account will be suspended or legal action will be taken unless you act quickly.

Legitimate organizations typically provide information in a more professional and less threatening manner.

Example:

• Phishing email: "URGENT: Your PayPal account will be permanently locked unless you verify your information within 24 hours!"

• Legitimate email: "Please review your recent PayPal transactions for accuracy."

Verify the request:

Contact the organization directly using their official contact information to confirm the email's authenticity if you receive a suspicious request, such as providing personal information, login credentials, or financial details. DO NOT use the link, phone number, or email address provided in the email, as these could be used to trick you into talking to the hackers instead of your real bank. Always use an external resource like a business card to acquire an organization’s information before calling or messaging them.

Enable spam filters:

Utilize your email provider's built-in spam filters to automatically detect and move phishing emails to your spam folder.

Report any spam emails that you may find in your inbox to your email provider so that they can better help you and the others around you protect themselves from spam.

Check for mismatched URLs:

Hover over links in the email without clicking on them to see the actual destination URL in the status bar or pop-up tooltip. Ensure that it matches the legitimate website of the organization acquired from an external source.

Never click on a link in an email, before being 100% sure the link is safe and leads to the intended source.

Example:

• Phishing email link: https://www.yourbank-login.com (not the legitimate bank's URL)

• Legitimate link: https://www.yourbank.com

Be cautious of unsolicited attachments:

A hacker’s email may contain malicious attachments. Avoid downloading or opening any attachments from unknown or untrusted sources.

Watch out for email headers:

Check the email's headers for inconsistencies or signs of spoofing. Some email clients allow you to view the email's raw source to inspect headers.

Antivirus Software

Keep your antivirus software up-to-date. It can help detect and quarantine malware emails and attachments.

Step 8: Remove Distractions

Distractions, like tiny cracks in a castle's walls, may seem insignificant at first, but when left unchecked, they can crumble the strongest kingdom from within.

Here are some tips for reducing distractions and spam in your inbox:

1. Use a Disposable Email Address: Consider using a disposable, aliased or secondary email address for online sign-ups, newsletters, and other non-essential communications. This way, your primary inbox remains relatively spam-free.

2. Enable Spam Filters: Most email providers offer spam filters that automatically move suspected spam to a separate folder. Ensure that your spam filter is enabled and periodically check the spam folder to ensure no legitimate emails were mistakenly classified as spam.

3. Be Cautious with Email Subscriptions: Be selective when subscribing to newsletters or online services. Only subscribe to reputable sources and review privacy policies to understand how your email address will be used.

4. Avoid Publicly Sharing Your Email Address: Avoid sharing your email address on public forums, social media profiles, or websites. Spammers often scrape the web for email addresses.

5. Unsubscribe from Unwanted Emails: If you receive emails from legitimate sources that you no longer wish to receive, use the unsubscribe link typically found at the bottom of the email. Be cautious when unsubscribing from unknown or suspicious sources, as it may confirm your email's validity to spammers.

6. Avoid Opening Suspicious Emails: Don't open emails from unknown senders or emails that look suspicious. Opening spam emails can sometimes confirm to spammers that your address is active.

7. Regularly Update Your Email Software: Ensure that your email software and operating system are up to date, as updates often include security enhancements that can help combat spam.

Step 9: Guard Your Secrets

Email was never meant to be a mass communication tool. It was created by Ray Tomlinson in the early 1970s to send messages between users on the ARPANET, an early precursor to the internet, primarily for local communication. This means that email is inherently insecure and should not be used for any sensitive communication. Do not share anything via email that you wouldn’t consider public knowledge.

For more advanced users, you can set up PGP4 to encrypt emails yourself using your own key.

Step 10: Hatch a good Escape Plan

Even the greatest fortresses will eventually fall. Make sure you have a carefully planned emergency strategy ready to help you retreat promptly when danger arises.

This is what to do in case all hell breaks loose and your email gets hacked:

1. Change Your Password:

   • Log in to your email account if you can still access it.

   • Change your password to a strong and unique one. Use a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters.

   • Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays or common words.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):

   • If not already enabled, set up two-factor authentication for your email account. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a secondary code or verification method to access your account.

3. Check for Suspicious Activity:

   • Review your email account for any unusual or suspicious activities. Look for sent emails you didn't send or unfamiliar contacts in your address book.

4. Scan Your Computer for Malware:

   • Run a thorough malware scan on your computer using reputable antivirus software. Hackers may have gained access to your account through malware or keyloggers.

5. Review Account Recovery Options:

   • Verify that the recovery email address and phone number associated with your account are accurate and up-to-date.

6. Contact Your Email Service Provider:

   • Reach out to your email service provider's customer support for assistance.

   • Inform your email service provider about the suspected hack. They may be able to identify and track down the malicious activity on your account.

   • They may have specific procedures and tools to help you recover your account and investigate any unauthorized access.

7. Monitor Your Account:

   • Continuously monitor your email account for any further suspicious activities. Report them promptly to your email service provider.

8. Change Passwords on Other Accounts:

   • If you use the same password for other accounts (which you shouldn't), change those passwords as well to prevent hackers from accessing other services.

9. Alert Your Contacts:

   • Send a message to your contacts, friends, and colleagues from an alternative and secure communication channel (e.g., a phone call or a different email account).

   • Inform them that your email account may have been compromised, and they should be cautious about any emails or messages received from your hacked account.

   • Advise them not to click on any links, download attachments, or provide sensitive information in response to emails from your compromised account until you confirm that it's secure again.

In this article, we'll cover changing your search engine on the most common web browsers, and even if your browser isn't on the list, chances are it follows a similar set of steps outlined in one of these options.

🔎 Google Chrome

2. Click on the three dots (menu) in the top-right corner to open the menu.

3. Go to "Settings."

An important step in your privacy and security journey is changing your DNS provider, as doing so comes with tons of benefits for very little effort. Changing your DNS provider is one of the first steps we always recommend beginners to do, so in this guide, we will show you how to do it on all your devices.

Before we Start:

• Just so you know, most of the big DNS companies offer installers. These are like apps, programs or scripts that set things up for you without you doing much - (these apps are very useful in operating systems like IOS where every DNS service has different instructions that may be hard to implement) - If you're not into that and want to do things manually by yourself, then keep reading.

• This guide might not stay completely current because user interfaces usually change over-time. If you see any differences or errors, please tell us in the comments so we can make corrections.

• In case of an error, trust your instincts to spot interface changes, and refer to an updated guide if you're uncertain.

• Some DNS providers offer extra functionalities such as blocklists and filters, make sure to use these features to your own benefit.

• Your DNS provider can see your traffic, which means it can see all the websites you connect to. It's important to choose a reliable and privacy-respecting DNS provider if you're concerned about your online privacy. Some providers might log and potentially use your DNS queries for nefarious purposes, while others might focus on maintaining privacy and security.

🪟 Windows 11:

Using DNS over HTTPS

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Go to Network & internet.

3. Click on Wi-Fi.

4. Click on Hardware properties.

5. Click the Edit button next to DNS server assignment.

6. Select Manual.

7. Enable IPv4 and IPv6.

8. Enter the credentials given to you by the DNS provider (usually found on their website).

9. Click Save.

• Find a specific online guide for your OS version that teaches you how to change your DNS provider, as interfaces vary a lot between older Windows versions.

👾 Android:

Using Private DNS

Android 9 or higher

1. Go to Settings → Network & internet → Advanced → Private DNS.

   1. Or Settings → Connections → More connection settings → Private DNS.

2. Select the Private DNS provider hostname option.

3. Enter the credentials (in this case the hostname) given to you by the DNS provider (usually found on their website).

4. Click Save.

Android 9 or lower

This only changes the DNS provider of the network you choose in the settings panel, connecting to any other networks will result in using your default DNS provider.

1. Go to Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi

2. Select the Wi-Fi network you're connected to.

3. Click on Advanced, then IP settings.

4. Change the dynamic option to "Static".

5. Enter the credentials given to you by the DNS provider (usually found on their website).

🍏 IOS:

IOS is a tricky one because there is no universal way of changing a DNS provider on there, so here are a few methods that we recommend:

Method 1 (recommended)

• Find out if your DNS provider of choice has an app, if so you can use the apps’ functionality to change your default DNS provider.

• Refer to the guidelines provided by the DNS provider, typically available on their website.

• DNS providers sometimes offer their own workarounds to help you switch to their product, such as using a VPN app that allows you to set custom DNS servers.

Method 2:

This only changes the DNS provider of the network you choose in the settings panel, connecting to any other networks will result in using your default DNS provider.

1. Go to Settings → Wi-Fi

2. Tap the "i" icon next to your connected Wi-Fi network

3. Then click on Configure DNS → Manual then add Server

4. Enter the credentials given to you by the DNS provider (usually found on their website).

🍎 MacOS:

For IPv4 and IPv6

This only changes the DNS provider of the network you choose in the settings panel, connecting to any other networks will result in using your default DNS provider.

1. Open System Preferences

2. Click on Network.

3. Select the network you are connected to, then click on the Advanced button.

4. Go to the DNS section.

5. In the DNS Servers list, remove all addresses (if any) then add the credentials given to you by the DNS provider (usually found on their website).

6. Click OK, then click Apply.

🐧 Linux:

• Changing your DNS servers on Linux machines usually requires some technical command-line knowledge and varies a lot between distributions and services, we recommend referring to the DNS’ provider’s website for clear instructions.

💻 ChromeOS:

Using Secure DNS

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Go to Security and Privacy.

3. Enable Use secure DNS.

4. Select With: Custom, then enter the credentials given to you by the DNS provider (usually found on their website).

📶 Routers:

• If you adjust your router's DNS settings, it means that every device connected to that router will automatically use the DNS you've chosen for their internet traffic.

• While there is no universal way of changing a router’s DNS settings, it usually involves the same four steps:

1. Login to the admin panel by typing your IP address in your browser bar (while connected to the router in question)

2. Enter the default credentials for admin login, you can find your routers’ specific username and password online. The most commonly used combination for both the username and password on many routers is "admin" and "admin."

   If you are using someone else’s router (such as your work wifi), they may have changed the default router login credentials.

3. After accessing the admin panel, navigate to your DNS settings and add the credentials given to you by the DNS provider (usually found on their website).

4. Reboot your router for the changes to take effect.

If these steps don’t work, refer to your router manufacturers’ website.

🌐 Browsers:

• You have the option to adjust the DNS settings within a specific browser, which means that the changes will only affect the DNS usage with traffic from that particular browser, rather than impacting the entire device.

Google Chrome

1. Go to Settings.

2. In the Privacy and security section, click on Security.

3. In the Advanced section, enable Use secure DNS.

4. Select With: Custom, then enter your DNS’s provider hostname.

Firefox Browser

1. Open Preferences.

2. Scroll down to the Network Settings section and click on Settings.

3. Scroll down and check Enable DNS over HTTPS.

4. Select Custom, enter your DNS’s provider hostname and click OK.

5. Enter "about:config" in the address bar (and click on I Accept the risk! if asked).

6. Set network.trr.mode to 3.

Microsoft Edge

1. Open Settings.

2. Go to the Privacy, search, and services section.

3. Under Security, enable Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for websites.

4. Select Choose a service provider, then enter your DNS’s provider hostname.

Brave Browser

1. Open Settings.

2. In the Privacy and security section (under Additional settings), go to Security.

3. In the Advanced section, enable Use secure DNS.

4. Select With: Custom, then enter your DNS’s provider hostname.

You've probably heard about a family member, close friend, or a stranger falling victim to a ransomware attack. This type of attack is extremely costly and aggressive if you aren’t prepared for it, with both individuals and businesses being targeted. If you're new to the world of ransomware, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. In this beginner's guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about ransomware, including how it works, the types of ransomware, and how to protect yourself from an attack (and no, it has nothing to do with pants this time). So, let's get started.

1) What is ransomware and how does it work?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that infects a computer or network and encrypts the victim's files, making them inaccessible. The attacker then demands a ransom payment, usually in the form of cryptocurrency, in exchange for a decryption key that will restore access to the files.

Once the ransomware has infected the victim's system, it will begin to encrypt files, often using a complex encryption algorithm that makes the files impossible to access without the decryption key. The attacker will then display a message on the victim's computer screen, demanding payment for the decryption key. If the victim pays the ransom, they will receive the key and be able to access their files again. However, there is no guarantee that the attacker will actually provide the decryption key, or that the files will be fully restored even if the victim pays the ransom. Additionally, paying the ransom only encourages attackers to continue with these types of attacks.

2) What are the different types of ransomware?

1. File-encrypting ransomware, also known as crypto ransomware, is the more common type of ransomware. It works by encrypting files on the victim's computer, making them unreadable without a decryption key. The attackers then demand a ransom payment in exchange for the key that will unlock the files. This type of ransomware can affect a wide range of file types, including documents, photos, videos, and music files. Once the ransomware has encrypted the files, the victim is left with very few options to recover the data . The most notorious examples of file-encrypting ransomware include WannaCry, Petya, and Locky.

2. Lockscreen ransomware, is a type of ransomware that prevents the victim from accessing their computer or mobile device. It displays a message on the screen, often claiming to be from law enforcement or a government agency, and accuses the victim of breaking the law. The message will then demand a payment in exchange for unlocking the device and restoring access. In some cases, the ransomware will also threaten to publish sensitive or embarrassing information unless the ransom is paid. Some examples of lockscreen ransomware include FBI MoneyPak and Jigsaw.

It's worth noting that there are many variations of ransomware, and attackers are constantly developing new methods to infect and exploit victims. In addition to the two main types of ransomware, there are also other subtypes, such as mobile ransomware, which targets mobile devices, and hybrid ransomware, which combines file-encrypting and lockscreen features. As ransomware continues to evolve and become more sophisticated, it's important to stay vigilant and take proactive measures to protect against these types of attacks.

3) How can ransomware infect my device?

Ransomware can infect your device through various means, including:

1. Email attachments: Cybercriminals may send phishing emails with infected attachments that, when opened, install the ransomware on your device.

2. Malicious links: Ransomware can also be spread through malicious links in emails, social media, or instant messages that lead to infected websites or downloads.

3. Infected downloads: Ransomware can also be spread through infected app downloads. This can occur when an attacker creates a fake app that looks like a legitimate one, such as a popular game or productivity tool, and distributes it through unofficial app stores or by tricking victims into downloading it from a fake website. Once the victim installs the app, the ransomware can then be installed and begin encrypting the victim's files.

4. Vulnerabilities in software: Outdated OS software or unpatched security vulnerabilities can also make your device more susceptible to ransomware attacks. Another method is through software vulnerabilities in legitimate apps. Attackers can exploit weaknesses in the code of legitimate software and inject the ransomware payload into the app's update or installation process. When a victim downloads or updates the app, the ransomware is installed silently in the background.

5. Malvertising: Ransomware can also be spread through malicious online advertisements, also known as malvertising.

6. USB drives: Cybercriminals may also distribute ransomware through infected USB drives or other removable media.
